Trip #87 Duncan Street, Upper Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh took place on December 4, 2017, and was published on January 26, 2018.
Isn’t it fascinating how weather and temperature can make you feel a certain way? Those end-of-winter-here-comes-spring days when you ditch the hat and gloves and enjoy the sunshine on your face are coming to mind as I sit here on the Duncan Street stairs. But this message is confusing (to me at least) when it comes at the wrong time in the season. The first tastes of spring, when they appear in late March or April, are joyful, full of promise and anticipation. But right now, I know it’s not even close to spring and winter will return with a vengeance. In a matter of hours, it will again be cold and damp and grey and hard. But even though this lies ahead, I’ll take today as it is and enjoy the feeling, and hold on to the sliver of hope it brings.
Field Notes: Easy to find, wooden flight. A little soft underfoot but otherwise ok. Nice view down into the neighborhood.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!

Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
