Trip #90 Bluebelle Street, Perry North, Pittsburgh took place on December 19, 2017, and was published on February 2, 2018.
“New” can be exciting, but new can also be scary. Eating new foods, getting new neighbors, buying new clothes, meeting new people, the list of new experiences is endless and unique to each of us. Isn’t it curious how traveling to a new place can be exciting (or not), but starting a new job can be scary (or not)? Sometimes, it’s invigorating for me to visit new places, and other times, it’s anxiety provoking. I was feeling very nervous right before visiting the Bluebelle Street stairs. I’m not sure what caused it, but I think it was because I had never traveled to Perry North before – it was NEW. How do I get there? How much traffic will there be? How long is it going to take? My mind was really going off the rails! And wouldn’t you know, once I started on the journey, I discovered it was so easy to get to. So simple to find. And it ended up being such a nice day to visit stairs with a pretty name.
Field Notes: The book has this listed as “Bluebell” but “Bluebelle” is how it’s spelled on the Pittsburgh Neighborhoods map. Super easy to find (once your searching on the right spelling) and the wooden stairs are sturdy even is the railings are a bit akimbo!
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
