Trip #91 Montana Street, Perry North, Pittsburgh took place on December 22, 2017, and was published on February 5, 2018.
Broadcast signals travel all around us. How it happens, I can’t explain, but it does, and all I need to do is turn on the radio, TV or computer, and they’re all there, just waiting for me to tune-in. Thousands, millions of choices are right at your fingertips. What message will you hear or see or read? Right now, the Montana Street stairs channel is featuring a bright red Cardinal at the birdfeeder, a background hum of roadway traffic, and the plaintive vocalizations of the District Council Representative (appointed, not elected) of Grizella Street. It’s a nice mix of melodic meow-pop, folksy feeder fusion, and symphonic street sounds. Best of all, this channel doesn’t require a subscription and is 100% free of charge! Excluding, of course, a small gratuity of cat treats, which I gladly dispense from my camera bag.
Field Notes: This flight goes up to a radio tower. It’s very sci-fi looking in an old-school way! Chain link fences and rusted warning signs. Met a super friendly cat (see the iPhone photo for their “portrait”).
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
