Trip #98 54th Street to Kendall Street, Upper Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh took place on February 1, 2018, and was published on February 21, 2018.
Slow down. Give yourself a moment. Relax your gaze, and you will see a path. A path that leads across, up and over the hillside. Perhaps this path existed long before the stairs arrived. Or maybe it’s new since the 56th Street stairs closed. But you wouldn’t know it was there unless you took a few minutes to investigate. It’s true, driving up and down and around in a car may be faster, easier, more comfortable, but there are so many curious things to see when you’re on foot and aren’t in a rush. There are several different ways to get to where you want to go, even if that’s just to the Shop n’ Save. Why take the same path every time?
Field Notes: These sidewalk steps lead along the narrow road off of 54th Street. Before you turn up Kendall you’ll see a path that leads off along the hillside toward the closed 56th Street stairs.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
