Trip #99 Harding Way (Fleetwood Way to Herron Avenue), Polish Hill, Pittsburgh took place on February 15, 2018, and was published on February 23, 2018.
We define SPACE through dimensions and position, and whether it’s the distance between buildings or cars or the square footage of your living quarters, how we respond to it is incredibly personal. “Gimme some space!” we cry out when feeling confined, penned in. Somehow, our perceptions of the space around us impacts our feelings, our mood, and our behaviors. But instead of thinking of space like Goldilocks (too much/not enough/just right) what if we looked at the shape of the space we create with our bodies and the other bodies (animate and inanimate) in our orbit. What’s the shape of the space when you’re feeling comfortable, connected or anxious? We may find that more or less isn’t necessary; a little rearranging might do the trick.
Field Notes: I visited this little side street in Polish Hill during a mid-week lunch break and was astounded how busy it was! Cars moving, people coming and going. Who would have thought??
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling. If the location has an abundance of illegal dumping and trash, also contact Allegheny Cleanways, letting them know the location and the nature of the garbage. Thank you!!
