Westwood Island, Westwood

Westwood Island, 1803 Nobelstown Road, Westwood

Suggested listening: Henry Mancini’s Theme from Fantasy Island

When I was photographing Pittsburgh’s city steps a few years ago, finding “flights” that were only 1 or 2 steps long always brought on a chuckle. Here in Westwood, I’ve discovered that this hyper-brevity also applies to parks, playgrounds, and greenspaces! While most of us associate play equipment, sports fields, trees, and trails with outdoor public spaces, some significant exceptions exist, and Westwood Island is one of them. Coming in a smidge under 566 square feet, this “park” is the FOURTH smallest in the city. (I have not visited the three tiniest spots yet, but you’re welcome to guess where they are.)

Westwood Island isn’t a place you’d choose for recreation; its size aside, getting there requires attention and care. Theoretically, vehicles turning south onto Crafton Boulevard must stop, but everyone else is moving along at a rate that would be fatal to someone working, standing, or walking, including the DPW crews responsible for maintenance. This “island park” is nothing more than a visual barrier designed to keep drivers in their travel lane as they turn onto Noblestown Road.

Not exactly uplifting news, huh? Fortunately, I’m a hopeful person who believes change is possible. So, I felt encouraged when I read on EngagePGH (https://engage.pittsburghpa.gov/) that this intersection is part of the West End Trolley Trail project. Approved drawings show some safety improvements for the intersection, making it easier and safer for everyone traveling through. Construction should begin later this year. Fingers crossed. Hope springs eternal.
