Trip #416 Huxley Street, Sheraden, Pittsburgh took place on March 2, 2020, and was published on March 23, 2020.
On the day of my visit (March 2), the three houses surrounding the Huxley Street stairs are undergoing repairs. Pick up trucks and vans with ladders and scaffolding line the streets. Men in overalls and workbooks come and go, talking on their phones, talking to one another. Three different radio stations play from three different rooftops: country, sports talk radio, and classic rock. The houses are like three little islands, each with a unique identity and culture, and I navigate the waterway-stairway from one to the next. Eyes open for photo opportunities, I take in all the sights and sounds. Am I an intentionally accidental tourist or one who is accidentally intentional?
Field Notes: Based on the Google Maps Street View I thought this might be closed but nope! Actually looking pretty clean and clear! This flight runs perpendicular to #415.
Want to visit these stairs? You can locate them on the Pittsburgh City Steps Plan website!
See the Risograph print of this photo and story in the Mis.Steps Shop.
Be a good neighbor! Have you visited these stairs and found them in poor condition or that illegal dumping (large items like tires, old furniture, and construction debris) and trash were abundant in the area? There are two things you can do to take action and make our city steps cleaner and safer for everyone! First, grab a photo if you can, and submit a report to Pittsburgh 311. All problems, both broken stairs, and railings, as well as trash and dumping, should be reported to the city. You can easily do this online or by calling.
