West Penn Park, Polish Hill: 470 30th Street
Like all creatures great and small, places also develop distinct personalities. West Penn Park in Polish Hill certainly has an alluring je ne sais quoi quality that keeps you guessing and coming back for more. DIY art installations tucked away, awaiting discovery. A well-tended community garden overflowing with flowers and produce. Salty babcie and crusty punks communing at the public pool. Little kids jumping around the spray park or riding bikes in the parking lot. And let’s not forget the skate park that had to be filled with sand during the early days of Covid, because the young and young at heart just couldn’t stay away. That incident might warrant a historical marker…
And while wandering the grounds, don’t be surprised if you fall prey to a sneaky trick or benefit from a miracle. It could be the work of those who lived and died in the Civil War hospital once occupying the back field. This is an entertaining and welcoming space for all, seen and unseen.
