Guided City Steps Walking Tours
NEW for 2024! Venture Outdoors, a Pittsburgh-area nonprofit, is offering a series of monthly city steps urban hikes. Tours are offered every month, May through mid-November. You can buy a package for all walks or purchase individual tickets.
Please note that for all guided tours, group size is limited. Dogs are allowed, but strollers for young children are discouraged (as you’ll need to fold/unfold and carry up/down long flights of stairs!) That said, it’s a great way to get some exercise, see Pittsburgh in a new way, and socialize in a fun, safe manner!
And don’t forget, over a dozen Pittsburgh walks are included in City Steps of Pittsburgh: A History & Guide! You can purchase through Amazon, Arcadia Publishing, or your favorite local bookseller.
Self-Guided Walks (which also include city steps!)
If you’re in the mood for a walk but unsure where to go, check out these fantastic free resources.
Southside Slopes Historic Route Series
Are you a fan of the annual StepTrek? Check out these walking routes from past events!
Fineview Fitness Trail
It’s called Fineview for a reason! When you need to catch your breath from the stairs and elevation, you can look out over downtown. For extra credit, jump off the official trail at Rising Main to test your superhuman powers.
Love 2 Chow’s Steps and Dine Hikes
Enjoy urban hikes through Troy Hill and the South Side Slopes, which feature some amazing food and drink spots.
To Heaven and Back: Troy Hill
Created by Erin Anderson and Danny Bracken in collaboration with Troy Hill Citizens Council, this 2019 video walk showcases the many city steps in Troy Hill. As of 2022, the tour route is no longer 100% viable as the stairs connecting Troy Hill Road to the Route 28 bike/pedestrian path are closed. However, there’s still lots to see and do (and hopefully, that closed flight will be re-opened someday…)
Northside Neighborhood Trails
The Northside neighborhood trails are part of the Northside Neighborhood Connections project of One Northside. One Northside is a community initiative driven by thousands of neighbors working to improve the quality of life in all 18 neighborhoods in Pittsburgh’s Northside. Use these maps to rediscover your own neighborhood, get to know a neighborhood that is new to you, or fall in love with the Northside!
Stepping Out in Pittsburgh’s Neighborhoods
Before COVID-19 hit, Pittsburgher Stuart Putnam became fascinated with the city steps and started writing short walking tours exploring some of his favorite neighborhoods. Rather than create his own website, he graciously donated them for use here. Thanks, Stuart!
